After injury forced an early retreat from my attempt at a Japan thru-hike, I returned to Australia and started this blog as consolation: a way to describe the highs and lows of my adventures over the years. Although not 100% about the outdoors, there’ll be enough reminiscence about the Appalachian and Long Trails, plus my other solo adventures in the wilds of America, Japan and Australia, to keep outdoor enthusiasts happy. My goal is to go beyond the mundane facts and figures and keep things as wry, literate and entertaining as I can manage.

Four Corners of JapanIan 'Mountaingoat' Fraser and Chris 'Ashioto' Lynch are walking the length of Japan, beginning in early April this year and covering all four of the main islands. Ian is walking from Japan's most-easterly to its most-westerly point; Chris from the most-southerly to the most-northerly point. As Japan is oriented in a narrow, angled line, the journeys are almost identical except for the beginnings and ends, and we will meet and pass somewhere in the middle. To ensure that both walkers cover a similar distance, and to provide two viewpoints of the same areas, we have chosen 20 'waypoints' through which me both must pass. These range from mountain summits to restaurants, shrines, hot springs etc. The journey will cover well over 2,000 miles and take up to five months. We will be stealth-camping for most of the walk.

Blogging Area:  Although Australian, we have been based in Tokyo since September last year.
Blogging Since: We've had it up since early last year and are still blogging regularly, outlining our preparations, training hikes, gear, general observations re Japan etc.

Bastish Hiking BlogThis blog is about a fellow living Japan. The blog began as a regular personal life diary blog and then developed into an outdoor climbing, hiking, biking blog. This type of blog evolution is inevitable for those who love the outdoors. If you're going to stick with a blog, you have to write about things that mean a lot to you. Anyway, the author includes very nice pictures with captions for each.
