Her Side of the Mountain

In the past five years since I started solo hiking and camping, I have encountered a lot of reactions, from the awed (”I could never do that, it must be amazing”) to the critical (”that is unnecessarily dangerous and stupid, and so are you”) to the curious and interested (”aren’t you bored/lonely/scared?”).  I have often wished there was some resource or guide I could have looked to for advice and encouragement, and so…Her Side of the Mountain was born.  May you learn from my mistakes, failures, joys and successes.

After injury forced an early retreat from my attempt at a Japan thru-hike, I returned to Australia and started this blog as consolation: a way to describe the highs and lows of my adventures over the years. Although not 100% about the outdoors, there’ll be enough reminiscence about the Appalachian and Long Trails, plus my other solo adventures in the wilds of America, Japan and Australia, to keep outdoor enthusiasts happy. My goal is to go beyond the mundane facts and figures and keep things as wry, literate and entertaining as I can manage.
